Group home for clients who need short term help coping with an exacerbation of their illness or who need long term support and assistance.
Located in the Center Building on the grounds of The Institute of Living, Eli’s Retreat is a 13 bed group home for clients who need short term (up to 6 months) help coping with an exacerbation of their illness or who need long term support and assistance.
Clinical services and referrals are managed through Capital Region Mental Health Services.
Please note: We do not accept community referrals. All referrals are managed through the Capitol Region Mental Health Center.

Staff provide social and life skills training, supportive counseling, and case management, and work closely with clinicians in the partial hospital programs and with hospital and community therapists. All clients are encouraged to make use of community resources and leisure opportunities. The program has its own van and routinely takes clients out for social and recreational activities, shopping, and errands. Located a little over one mile from downtown Hartford, Eli’s Retreat, and other residences, offer easy bus access into the community.

- On site bank provided by Hartford HealthCare. Clients can cash checks free of charge. They can use the bank while living at one of our residential programs as a way to save their money. No ID required.
- Staff are on-site 24 hours per day.
- Medications are held in the office; clients self-administer medications under staff supervision.
- Only un-motorized vehicles are allowed for clients.
Clients’ needs and strengths determine the level of support and supervision that they have available to them and the amount of autonomy that they are granted. Some clients leave grounds only with staff, or by themselves for local errands only. Others may use the bus system, or even their own vehicles, to attend school, work or leisure activities.

Vocational Counselor
- Helps clients explore realistic vocational goals
- Provides pre-vocational training program to give structure and assess basic job readiness (i.e. attendance, hygiene, social skills)
- Offers paid work skills training opportunities in the IOL cafeteria and gift shop for clients ready to develop competitive work skills
- Provides job seeking skills training as needed (applications, resumes, interview skills etc.)
- Can make referrals to community vocational agencies
Recreational Therapist
- Facilitates Morning Group
- Facilitates Community Meeting
- Provides transportation to retail shops
- Conducts BINGO
- Takes clients to local events/outings (movies, sporting events, parks, and more)
- Celebrate birthdays for each client, where they are able to go with staff to purchase a cake of their choice.
- Holidays are celebrated with all clients
Things that we have done in the past
- Several trips to Lake Compounce during the summer. Staff pays for admission as well as a meal at the park.
- We bring clients to the Big E and pay for their admission to the Big E. Clients are responsible for paying for everything inside of the Big E that they want.
