What Is Reproductive Psychiatry/Mental Health?

Reproductive psychiatry focuses on managing mood, anxiety, and other psychiatric symptoms across key reproductive stages—pre‑menstrual, pregnancy, postpartum, infertility/loss, perimenopause, and menopause. These periods involve significant hormonal, physiological, and life style changes, and carry elevated risk for illness, requiring specialized expertise to:

  • Diagnose and treat psychiatric conditions impacted by reproductive transitions
  • Carefully balance treatment risks against the potential harm of untreated illness during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Coordinate care with obstetricians, general practitioners, and established psychiatrists for collaborative support

Reproductive Mental Health Services is committed to delivering specialized, compassionate care to support mental health through reproductive transitions. We regularly collaborate with Women’s Health Services and Health Psychology at Hartford Hospital.

We specialize in two core clinical services:

Perinatal Day Program

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that offers structured, multi-day care for acute or complex mental health needs during pregnancy and postpartum. Babies who are not yet mobile can attend sessions with their mothers.

The Consultative Clinic
